Equipping TVET Students for Entrepreneurship: From Skills to Income at American Corner Agbogba

April 9, 2026 by

Many young people have valuable vocational skills: but too often, those skills remain underutilized. The real challenge isn’t learning a trade; it’s turning that skill into consistent income and a sustainable business. At American Corner Agbogba, this gap became the focus of a powerful session that is helping students rethink what’s possible. This session was attended by dignitaries from the U.S. Embassy Ghana, alongside representatives from the Ghana TVET Regional Office and five technical institutions.

Bringing Together Ghana’s TVET Community

The session welcomed participants from five leading technical institutions:

  • Danfa Technical Institute
  • Madina Technical Institute
  • Applied Technical Institute
  • Accra Technical Training Centre
  • Opportunities Industrialization Technical Institute

This diverse participation created a dynamic learning environment where technical skills met entrepreneurship, reinforcing the importance of moving beyond skill acquisition to income generation and business development.

A Strong Call to Empower Youth

The session opened with inspiring remarks from Hannah Fitter, Regional Public Engagement Specialist (REPS) for West and Coastal Regions of Africa at the U.S. Embassy Ghana.

In her remarks, she emphasized the importance of equipping young people not only with vocational skills but also with the entrepreneurial mindset, tools, and knowledge needed to thrive in today’s economy. She highlighted that empowering youth in this way contributes significantly to economic growth, innovation, and community development.

The session was facilitated by Dr. Shola Safo-Duodu, Founder and Executive Director of Sababa Development Center, alongside Christabel Ofori, entrepreneur and alumna of the Academy for Women Entrepreneurs and founder of Afcallo Ventures and Flocare Beauty.

Drawing from their professional and entrepreneurial journeys, the facilitators provided practical, experience-driven insights into what it takes to move from having a skill to building a profitable and sustainable business.

Participants explored key areas including:

  • Understanding the difference between a skill, a hustle, and a business
  • Identifying market needs and customer problems
  • Developing a strong value proposition
  • Building simple but effective business models
  • Overcoming common challenges such as low sales, limited capital, and poor marketing

Shifting the Mindset: Skills + Demand + Structure

A central message of the session was clear:

Having a skill alone does not guarantee income.

Participants were introduced to a powerful mindset shift: understanding that income comes from combining skill, market demand, and the right business structure.

Through interactive discussions, students reflected on questions such as:

  • What problem does my skill solve?
  • Who needs this solution?
  • How can I position my product or service effectively?

This approach encouraged participants to begin thinking like entrepreneurs, not just skilled individuals.

This session highlighted the critical role of skills development combined with entrepreneurship in building sustainable livelihoods. It reinforced the idea that vocational training, when paired with the right knowledge and mindset, can become a powerful driver of self-employment, job creation, and economic resilience.

American Corner Agbogba, a partnership between Mobile Web Ghana and the U.S. Embassy Ghana, continues to serve as a hub for skills development and entrepreneurship.

Through initiatives like this, the Corner remains committed to empowering more TVET students across Ghana with the tools, knowledge, and entrepreneurial mindset needed to turn their skills into sustainable livelihoods.
