Coding for Sustainability: Turning Young Game Players into Game Creators in Otinibi

November 28, 2025 by

Around the world, millions of young people spend hours each day playing digital games, yet only a small number ever imagine creating one themselves. At American Corner Agbogba, we saw an opportunity: what if we could shift that same energy from consumption to creation? What if Ghanaian children could build games that not only entertain but also teach important lessons about the world around them?

That vision led to our Coding for Sustainability project which forms as a part of the American Corner,Agbogba STEM Series initiative delivered in partnership with the Zoomlion Foundation.

The Demo day began with opening remarks from Madam Florence Toffa, Director of Mobile Web Ghana and American Corner Agbogba. She highlighted the relevance of the program in today’s technology-driven world and encouraged the students to continue harnessing technology for the greater good of their communities and beyond.

Over the course of two weeks, students from the Otinibi community were introduced to the exciting world of game development. With hands-on coding training facilitated by Emmanuel Quashe, One of Mobile Web Ghana’s scratch coding trainer, the students learned to design characters, create scenes, and program actions using Scratch. For many, it was the first time they realized that the games they love are made by people just like them and that they, too, could be creators.

But this project was not only about learning to code. The Zoomlion Foundation led engaging sessions focused on environmental sustainability, helping students understand the role proper waste management plays in keeping communities clean and healthy.

The challenge for the students was to build a fun, interactive waste separation game that teaches players how to sort plastic, organic waste, paper, and other materials into the right bins. The game was designed to be played on both mobile phones and laptops, making it accessible and educational for a wide range of users. By combining digital skills and environmental knowledge, the students created a tool that reinforces sustainability in a way that feels natural, playful, and innovative.

On 31st October 2025, we hosted a Demo Day that brought together over 100 students from schools in Otinibi. The atmosphere was filled with excitement as participants proudly showcased their games, explained their coding process, and tried out each other’s creations. Teachers, facilitators, and community members were amazed by how quickly the students had grown from game players to game developers.

To celebrate their dedication and growth, participants received certificates in Introduction to Scratch Coding as well as souvenirs from American Corner Agbogba and ZoomLion Foundation. The moment was a joyful reminder of how exposure, encouragement, and hands-on learning can transform young minds.

This project proved a powerful point: when young people are given the right guidance and tools, they can create technology that impacts their community. Through this training, students gained digital literacy and basic coding skills, a deeper understanding of environmental sustainability, confidence in producing technology solutions, and the joy of building something meaningful from scratch.

Our partnership with the Zoomlion Foundation reflects a shared commitment to empowering young people through hands-on STEM education. At American Corner Agbogba, we will continue creating avenues where students can transform their ideas into practical solutions, proving that the next generation of innovators is already here, waiting to be nurtured.
