Celebrating Literature and Empowering Writers: Pa Gya Festival at American Corner Agbogba

October 23, 2026 by

What does it take to build a thriving literary community? For writers, it takes more than a good story. It takes access to publishing opportunities, sustainable funding, professional support, and a community that believes in the power of the written word.

These questions took centre stage at American Corner Agbogba on Monday, October 19, 2026, as the Corner hosted two engaging sessions during the 10th edition of the Pa Gya! Literary Festival.

The event brought together writers, scholars, researchers, and literary enthusiasts to explore the realities of publishing and the experiences of today’s writing community.

The sessions were opened by Florence Toffa, Director of American Corner Agbogba, who welcomed participants and set the tone for conversations around literature, publishing, and the development of the writing community.

The first session, a roundtable discussion on literary and academic journals, explored the opportunities and challenges within the publishing industry.

Professor Jeffrey Renard Allen of Queens College, City University of New York, shared insights into literary publishing, drawing on his experience with publications such as The Evergreen Review. Participants discussed editorial standards, author compensation, and the financial models that sustain literary journals.

The conversation also highlighted the funding challenges facing Ghanaian writers and publishers, the importance of maintaining quality in publishing, and the growing influence of artificial intelligence on creative writing and journalism.

The discussions extended beyond publishing processes to address the everyday realities of being a writer.

During the Engagement with the Writing Community session, participants explored the financial challenges writers face, changing reading habits, popular literary themes, and the journey from writing a manuscript to reaching an audience.

The conversations reinforced the importance of building stronger networks, creating professional development opportunities, and exploring sustainable ways to support Ghana’s literary community.

The event provided a valuable platform for participants to exchange ideas, share experiences, and build professional connections across different fields.

With the support of Ms. Rita Awuku, Director of the American Center at the U.S. Embassy in Accra, the gathering highlighted the value of spaces that encourage learning, collaboration, and meaningful dialogue.

The Pa Gya! Literary Festival sessions at American Corner Agbogba demonstrated that strengthening literature requires more than celebrating books. It also means supporting writers, improving access to publishing opportunities, encouraging innovation, and creating communities where ideas can grow.

At American Corner Agbogba, conversations like these help bring people together around shared interests and new possibilities.

Because every great story deserves a chance to be told, published, and heard.
